There are things that I tend to draw as an artist, and for the most part those are portraits. I love them; especially the eyes. I feel that if you don’t get the eyes just right the portrait loses something profound. The eyes are what give the portrait its life and as such I have done dozens of eye studies over the years to perfect my style and technique; but I am always learning something from the new media artists. I have used their techniques on creating realistic eyes and transferred it to my own style and the eyes of my characters just glow.
I find myself drawn to Tolkien’s works of Middle Earth for inspiration and I feel like it is a duty to try in some way to bring the characters he filled with words and works of renown and passion to life in image and face. I feel myself drawn to John Howe and Alan Lee because they have such beautiful drawings that are very much in a similar style to my own. I also admire Jenny Dolfen, a watercolor illustrator who I go back to from time to time just to enjoy her work and find a new style or technique to use in my own works. More often than not these days my work has been about my own book and fleshing out my own characters, but returning to The Silmarillion and working on giving those characters a real face is a joy.
